Perhaps the most well known bus in the world is London’s Routemaster or RM as it’s known. Having served the capital for over 50 years, the final 500 in service are being gradually taken out of service route by route in a process that will see them all withdrawn from regular passenger service by the end of 2005. There are many different varieties and modifications made over the years however two main body styles were built both of which have lasted in service until the end. The RM is the standard length 27ft 6inches and is now the rarer of the two styles left in London, these vehicles seat 64 passengers with 5 standing permitted.
The
RML is the slightly longer version being
29ft 10 inches long and seating 72 passengers with 5 standees.
Throughout the early 1990’s the original AEC engines were replaced by newer units made by different manufactures the three main ones being:
This makes spare parts easier to come by. At the same time the vehicles went into a refurbishment programme that included:
The vehicles we sell now are all straight from service and are therefore kept to a high mechanical standard. Some do however have small amounts of graffiti or scratched glass all of which can be replaced to order. Other work Many people wishing to purchase an RM would like work done on the vehicle to ready for its new use. All sorts of work has and can be carried out including, repainting, MOT’s, servicing, conversions or complete restorations back to original specification.
